Disruption details

British Airways canceled flight BA254 from Bridgetown, Barbados to London Gatwick before its scheduled 4:40 pm departure after several cabin crew members were found unfit to work following excessive drinking the night before.

For passengers, this meant an abrupt change of plans. With no replacement crew available locally, the airline called off the 16-hour service and up to 336 passengers were left stranded in Bridgetown while alternative travel was arranged.

The crew had been staying at an all-inclusive resort ahead of the flight. Guests reported a disturbance at the bar, with at least two employees becoming visibly unwell and needing help back to their rooms. Video of the incident later circulated among resort guests, who identified the people involved as British Airways staff.

The behavior left British Airways without enough fit crew members to operate the flight safely and within the rules. Because there were no standby crew members available in Barbados, BA254 was canceled outright rather than delayed for a short period.

The service had been due to leave at 4:40 pm on Sunday and land in the UK at 6:20 am the following morning. Instead, affected travelers had to remain in Barbados longer while British Airways worked on rebooking and other travel options. The crew members involved were then sent home on regular passenger flights over the following days.

British Airways has suspended four crew members and opened an internal investigation. The airline said it expects the highest standards from its staff and is urgently looking into what happened.

The disruption appears to have been limited to this one flight, with no wider knock-on cancellations reported. Even so, the incident has raised questions about how crew rest and supervision are handled on long-haul layovers during a busy travel period.

If you were booked on this British Airways-operated flight to London Gatwick, you may be entitled to up to US$650 compensation under EC 261 because the cancellation was linked to an issue within the airline's control. You should also be offered rerouting or a refund, plus meals, refreshments, and hotel accommodation if your delay stretched overnight. Request an alternative flight to your destination — or a refund if you no longer wish to travel.

Make a note of the arrival time at your final destination.

Ask the airline to provide vouchers for meals and refreshments.
